Disabled Person’s Parking Badge

There is a national system of parking concessions for drivers or passengers with severe disabilities.  There are certain rules about how and when the badge is used, but even so it usually means parking much closer to where you want to be.  Children under 2 do not qualify.  In some cases Health and Social Care will be required to write to your GP for further details before a badge is issued.  To apply, contact:

Exemption from Road Tax

If you child already gets the higher rate DLA mobility component, you can request a VED exemption form from the DWP.  It is important that you complete and return the exemption form to the address stated on the form.  If you require a form, write to:

Motability

The Motability Scheme is the UK’s leading car scheme for disabled people. It provides affordable, convenient, trouble-free motoring to over 440,000 disabled customers and their families. Powered wheelchairs and scooters can also be financed using the Motability Scheme.

The scheme is available to anyone receiving the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance, or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement. Customers can transfer their mobility allowance to lease or purchase a car, powered wheelchair or scooter. A parent or carer can apply on behalf of a child in receipt of the relevant benefit.

The scheme is directed and overseen by Motability, a national charity committed to meeting the mobility needs of disabled people the charity also provides grants to customers, who would otherwise be unable to afford the mobility solution they need.

Family Fund Trust

Modest grants can be made towards transport costs such as fares or car expenses, ie, petrol, running costs, major repairs, where a child gets only the lower rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance.
